One Year Ago

One year ago, Matt and I discovered that I was pregnant. We had just bought and moved into our first house and one week later we found out we were expecting. We have good timing like that. At first we were pretty shocked. I guess we were officially trying, but we both expected and planned for it to take a lot longer than it did. We were so shocked, in fact, that I took approximately 4 pregnancy tests that first day and then three more over the course of the next several weeks. We told our mothers pretty much immediately. Then we waited a few weeks and told our fathers, siblings, and certain close friends. Still, not announcing the pregnancy to other friends and coworkers was the hardest secret I've ever had to keep.

Matt took my being pregnant very seriously. He purchased and read a number of books on pregnancy, including the scary What to Expect When You're Expecting, which, in my mind, should be renamed to the 1001 Things That Can Go Wrong When You're Expecting. I had morning sickness all day long for about eight weeks and threw up in some pretty random places. I had heartburn and back pain and needed to use the bathroom every five and half minutes and, honestly, really hated being pregnant. That was before I was hospitalized for various other pregnancy complications and ended up on bed rest for the last ten weeks of the pregnancy.

But, oh boy, did we love the result. And, crazily enough, I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.
